In an exclusive interview with ESPN, Fluminense president Mario Bittencourt opened up about their conversation with the former PSG and Barcelona forward.
“Neymar made it clear that he was very eager, but at that moment he was fully focused on his recovery and helping navigate Santos' current challenges,” Bittencourt shared. “He’s an athlete who grew up at Santos, and I respect his approach—it’s both admirable and dignified. He also showed respect in his communication with us—he wanted to personally explain why he couldn’t join at this time. He didn’t rule out the possibility in the future, though. In my opinion, he should return to the national team as soon as he’s fully fit.”
Shortly after this interview, Neymar himself confirmed the discussions in a statement:
“I was very close to joining Fluminense for the FIFA Club World Cup this month, it was a serious chance… then, deal off. I decided not to proceed and stay at Santos to recover as I’m not 100% fit yet and I want to be in my best condition as soon as possible.”
This decision highlights Neymar’s dedication to his fitness and long-term goals. It's also worth noting that Neymar returned to Santos earlier this year after terminating his contract with Al-Hilal. Since rejoining the Brazilian side, he has made 12 appearances, scoring 3 goals and delivering 3 assists. His current contract with Santos runs until the end of June.
