Neymar Tests Positive for COVID-19, Confirms Santos

Brazilian forward Neymar has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently receiving treatment at home, his club Santos confirmed in a statement on Saturday.

“After showing symptoms of a viral infection on Thursday (June 5), Neymar Jr. underwent laboratory testing. Following evaluation by the Santos FC medical team, COVID-19 infection was confirmed,” the club said.

The 33-year-old had already withdrawn from team activities since Thursday when symptoms first appeared. He is now resting at home and undergoing symptomatic treatment as per medical advice.

This marks the second time Neymar has contracted the virus — the first was in May 2021 during his stint with Paris Saint-Germain. He recovered after four months and had returned to training feeling "super happy."

Since leaving PSG in 2023, Neymar has returned to his boyhood club, Santos, but has struggled to regain top form. Despite this, he remains Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer with 79 international goals.

Injuries have significantly affected his career in recent years. His last appearance for Brazil came in October 2023 during a 2–0 defeat to Uruguay, where he was stretchered off the field due to injury.

As a result, Neymar has missed the 2024 Copa América and was not included in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad for Brazil’s ongoing World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay.
